Question: Is the stomach flu really the flu?

Answer: Remember that influenza is a respiratory disease. What people may call the stomach flu—with symptoms including diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting—rarely has anything to do with influenza. Although these symptoms might be present if someone has the flu, they are more common in children than adults and are not the main symptoms of the flu.

Viral gastroenteritis, also called stomach flu, is an inflammation of the stomach and intestines that can be caused by several different viruses—but it is not related to influenza. It is highly contagious and can be spread through close contact with people who are infected or through contaminated food or water.

Several viruses can cause viral gastroenteritis. Two of the most common are norovirus and rotavirus.

Norovirus is the most common cause of foodborne illness and is more often found in crowded spaces. It can affect both children and adults, with symptoms lasting from one to three days. Norovirus is the leading cause of gastroenteritis worldwide. Although it can occur at any time of the year, most outbreaks in the United States occur between November and April. Symptoms include the following:

Body aches

Diarrhea

Fever

Nausea
